There are country singers that give you chills when they belt out a song. These are the singers with what I call "the voice." The list I've compiled below are today's country female singers that have the type of voice that can sing anything, and do it with power, or understated elegance.
Trisha Yearwood can sing any type of music, and sing it perfectly. She's got a great range, and she picks the songs that fit her voice to perfection when recording an album. Her debut Big Machine album Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love gave her the opportunity to record what she wanted, and the result is magic.
2. Martina McBride
With nine studio releases to her credit, the latest being Shine, Martina remains one of the most powerful voices in country music today. She may be little, but she packs a punch when she powers through emotional songs like "Independence Day," "Where Would You Be" and her latest single, "Ride."
3. Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood won America's hearts on Season 4 of American Idol, where she showed that she could sing just about everything really well. Every time I hear her hit those power notes in "I Told You So," I get shivers.
4. Rebecca Lynn Howard
Of the songs, the bluesy "Out Here In The Water," the beautiful ballads, "I Don't Paint Myself Into Corners" and "Melancholy Blue" stand out. Having had written songs for other artists prior to this release, most notably John Michael Montgomery, it's not surprising that Rebecca wrote 10 of the 12 tracks on this CD. The title track from a later CD Forgive really showcases the powerhouse voice she has.
5. Wynonna Judd
Wynonna started her singing career as one half of the mother-daughter team, The Judds. When Naomi was diagnosed with a chronic liver disease and had to stop performing Wy went on to have a successful solo career. On Sing: Chapter One, Wy paid tribute to the many musical influences that made her the artist she is today. Whether she's singing a country gospel tune, or a flat out country rocker, the voice is exceptional.
