Top 10 Top 10 Country Songs of the Summer of 2006

By Shelly Fabian, About.com

I've compiled a list of songs that have peaked on the charts throughout the Summer of 2006. Ranked by the amount of time they spent at/or near the top of the charts, we have eight male artists, one female, and one duo. Some of the artists are really new, while others have been around for over ten years. And now... the Country Songs of the Summer of 2006.

1. "Summertime" - Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney - The Road and the Radio
From the album The Road and The Radio, this song spent five weeks at No. 1 this Summer. With a title like this, you knew it was going to be a big summer song. But the song is more than just its title. It brings back memories of Summers gone by, and makes you yearn for Summers to come. ~ Download

2. "If You're Going Through Hell (Before The Devil Even Knows)" - Rodney Atkins

Rodney Atkins - If You're Going Through Hell
If you have never heard this song, you must have not listened country radio this Summer. From the album of the same name, this song spent four weeks at the top of the charts this Summer. It's one that's easy to sing along to, and really propelled Rodney Atkins into the public eye. I, for one, am so happy to see it. Having seen him live back in 2003, I knew this guy was a star.

3. "The World" - Brad Paisley

From the album Time Well Wasted, Brad Paisley's "The World" spent three weeks at No. 1. With fun lyrics like "To the waiter at the restaurant, you're just another tip / To the guy at the ice cream shop, You're just another dip," how can you not like this song? Not only is this a great song, but it has an adorable video to go with it. ~ Download

4. "Settle For a Slowdown" - Dierks Bentley

Dierks Bentley is really moving up to where he will be one of the artists considered when it comes to Male Vocalist nominations. This song is from his sophomore release, Modern Day Drifter, and it spent two weeks at the top of the charts. ~ Download

5. "Why" - Jason Aldean

I have a soft spot for Jason, having attended his No. 1 party for this song during the 2006 CMA Music Festival. He so deserves all the great things said about him. He is truly talented. This song is my favorite from his self-titled album. ~ Download

6. "Leave The Pieces" - The Wreckers

The Wreckers are a brand new duo, comprised of Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp. Michelle had previously had recognition as a pop star, but I think her country side really comes alive in this debut single from the Wreckers' Stand Still, Look Pretty. The song has spent one week at No. 1 on the September 9, 2006 chart. ~ Download

7. "Don't Forget To Remember Me" - Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood was the winner of the American Idol talent competition in 2005, but she showed everyone that just because she got her start on a pop-oriented show, she is not only pop, she's definitely country too. This song peaked at No. 2, and spent three weeks there. This is from her triple platinum album, Some Hearts. ~ Download

8. "A Little Too Late" - Toby Keith

This is from Toby's debut album on his own Show Dog Records label, called White Trash With Money. I was really happy to hear this song, which is a change from the attitude-infused songs he had been putting out for a while. It's nice to hear about something that doesn't have to do with getting drunk, or getting in a fight for a change. The song peaked at No. 2, and spent two weeks in that position this Summer. Download

9. "Last Day Of My Life" - Phil Vassar

Phil Vassar has always been an awesome songwriter, penning hits for Jo Dee Messina, Tim McGraw and others before getting his own record deal. This song was one of the new tracks off his Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 album, and as definitely a hit in its own right, spending two weeks at No. 2. ~ Download

10. "Brand New Girlfriend" - Steve Holy

This song is all over the place. I hear it all the time, and I see the video on CMT and GAC a lot, as well. The song spent two weeks at No. 3, and just may move even higher as the week's go by. This is from Steve's sophomore album of the same name.
