Guide Review - Travis Tritt - Country Club
Travis Tritt wasn't welcomed into the fold of the country star with open arms. He had to sneak in quietly, and was largely hidden behind the flashy marketing of Garth Brooks and the powerful thunder of Clint Black. Nashville viewed Tritt with some amount of trepidation after all, outlaws had rocked the Nashville boat more than once, and Travis Tritt definitely had an edge to his country that was almost too much rock. But Travis was pure country, edged though he might be, and with his first song, "Country Club," he proved it. Travis Tritt may not have made as much noise as his fellow neotraditionalists, but he dug right in and proved his longevity, his commitment to real country music, and his style, which has remained true to this initial offering.
Tritt tears the heart with marvelous ballads such as the magnificent "Drift Off To Dream," but the lesser-known cuts from this disc are every bit as good as the three major singles it released. Such powerful songs as "I'm Gonna Be Somebody" and "Son of the New South" amply showcase Travis Tritt's growling, gritty voice, and excellent self-penned offers as "Put Some Drive in Your Country" and "Sign of the Times" demonstrate his masterful songwriting ability. Travis Tritt may have started with a low profile, but he took this first pick and built it to a thundering roar, a consistently excellent singer/songwriter with a powerful catalog, tremendous videos, and heart and soul that makes him a true voice for real country music.
