.WAV
The format for storing sound in files developed jointly by Microsoft and IBM. Support for WAV files was built into Windows 95 making it the de facto standard for sound on PCs. WAV sound files end with a .wav extension and can be played by nearly all Windows applications that support sound.
.WMA
This format for storing audio sound files came after .wav. It was designed by Microsoft to be used with their Windows Media Player. The WMA stands for "Windows Media Audio." This type of file has evolved to the point where they're encrypted with anti-copy tools so that unless the file is actually purchased legitimately, then it will only play on a computer not be burned to a disc (Napster uses these files).
8-40x CD-R
The 8-40x refers to the speed in which a burn is completed. While faster burns are nice, the disc MUST be able to record at that speed thus make sure to buy the kind of discs that are compatible with your burner.
Archive
This term refers to a file which contains a number of related files, usually in a compressed format. Also can be known as a Database or a Spreadsheet.
Burner
The CD Rom in your computer is also called a burner IF it has a Re-writable drive. You need a Re-writable drive to "burn" CDs.
CD-R
This is the recordable version of a CD. It comes in two main formats either 74 minutes or 80 minutes.
CD-RW
This is a CD-Rom recordable CD that can also be erased and re-written. However, it won't work on a standard CD player so in order to hear a music CD, you must record onto a CD-R disc.
Cells
This term is the commonly used term (by accountants and book keepers) for a box in a spreadsheet database. Also known as a column.
Database
This term refers to a file which contains a number of related files, usually in a compressed format. Also known as a Spreadsheet or Archive.
Downloading
This term refers to the way in which people legally or illegally attain their music on-line. Because of copyright issues, one should always download legally from a service like I-tunes, Napster, Rhapsody or Wal-Mart.com.

I-Tunes
Created by the folks that brought us the Macintosh computers (now simply I-Macs) I-Tunes was developed to work with Apple's I-Pod portable music players. It's a store that sells music downloads.
Microsoft Excel
A spreadsheet program in which databases can be created and maintained with. A part of Microsoft's Office XP suite of programs.
Microsoft Office XP
The renowned product used in virtually every office in America and most of the world. Microsoft Office has a variety of programs including Excel, and the word processing program, Microsoft Word. One drawback for Office XP is the price which is typically over $150 dollars. Microsoft does sell each part of the Office package separately though.
Microsoft Works
A cheaper alternative to the Office XP suite. Contains many similar programs as Office, including Microsoft Word and a Spreadsheet form.
Mp3
This term means that a computer shrinks the original sound data from a CD by a factor of 12 while not compromising the sound quality of the audio. This is the most commonly used type of file for music downloading. Other files types are .wav (for wave audio files) and .wma (for Windows Media files). Apple's I-Tunes uses their own file type as well. Note: because these files are small, they are easily transferable over the Internet.
Napster
Originally created by a college student, Napster was the infamous face of illegal Peer-to-peer downloading and was shutdown by a lawsuit. Now a legitimate company, they offer jukebox and radio like services for a small monthly fee or you can simply buy tracks and albums and download them. Napster uses the .wma file format.
Nero
This is software designed for creating musical compilation discs. It also can make home DVDs and other neat stuff.
Peer-to-Peer
This term refers to the illegal file-sharing systems in which people download files from person-to-person.
Rhapsody
This is a download service similar to Napster and I-Tunes.
Rip
This Term is taken from the Slang word "rip off" or "Rip off of." Simply, to rip a song is to take it from an album and make it into a music file on a computer.
Spreadsheet
This term refers to a file which contains a number of related files, usually in a compressed format. Also known as an Archive or Database.
Wal-mart.com
In addition to being a shopping site for the mega company, the website offers Mp3 downloading for 88 cents a song. Many new country songs can be found here before any other download site.
